Mayor Frank Scarpitti is planning to combine the 220th Anniversary of the founding of Markham with the inaugural meeting of the new council on Monday, December 1, 7 – 9 p.m. at the Flato Markham Theatre. If you live near Markham and can attend, please let Lorne Smith know in the next couple of days as the mayor wishes to send out invitations.
Lorne’s contact information is on our website http://markhamberczysettlers.ca/?page_id=6. There will be a display from the Museum and refreshments following. Lorne has just received this request so he apologizes for the short notice.
We hope some families can be represented during this special evening.
The Tuesday following Thanksgiving is German Pioneers Day in Ontario. This day was established by legislation that took effect in 2000.
In 2012, a delegation that included some of the members of the Markham Berczy Settlers’ Association appeared before the City of Markham council. Lorne Smith spoke about our ancestors. You can read about it here.

This year there will be public recognition of this day in Toronto and Kitchener.
For the descendants of the Markham Berczy settlers who came to Canada in 1794, it is an opportunity for us to honour our ancestors. It is a day when we can think about the challenges they faced during their journey and when they arrived in a new country and their contributions to Canada.
