Stiver Reunion

Are you a descendant of John and Anna Stiver? Their children were as follows:

  1. Mary Ann who married John Englehard Helmke
  2. Peter who married Agnes Nancy Spring
  3. Hannah who married Josiah Hemingway
  4. Henry who married 1st Nancy Wagner and after her death Margaret Galbraith
  5. Francis who married Elizabeth Lindsay
  6. John Henry who married Mary Ann Schutze

You and your family are invited to the Stiver Reunion. On August 22, 23 and 24, 2014, the Stiver family are planning a big family reunion in Unionville, Ontario (part of Markham). The last Stiver reunion was in 1964. Some Stiver family descendants were also part of the large gathering in 1994 when the Markham Berczy Settlers Association celebrated the 200th anniversary of the arrival in Markham Township, Ontario. Some also attended the Research Week in 2010.

Friday, August 22 at 7:00 PM: Stiver Reunion casual gathering at Jakes restaurant on Kennedy Road in Unionville. Jakes is located in the house originally built by Charles E. Stiver on Main Street.

Saturday, August 23 from 12 to 2:30 PM: Gathering and information sharing. Warden House was built ca. 1860 as the farm house of William and Susan (Hesk) Stiver. It is now preserved as a community centre. Note: Limited handicap parking on site. Read parking instructions on the Reunion Site. Map is also available there. Parking is available at Coledale School but it is about a 15 minute walk.

Bring photographs and family information. Bring with you an ancestral chart that you have filled in to show how you are related to John and Anna Stiver. This one is in Adobe Acrobat Reader format. You will have to print it out and then fill it in. 3:00 PM: Panoramic photo of the group – Please arrive no later than 2:30 PM so everyone can get in place.

5:00 PM: 2014 Stiver Reunion Dinner at Jakes restaurant on Kennedy Road in Unionville, the historic house originally built by Charles E. Stiver on Main Street. The manager at Jakes has devised a special menu for our reunion dinner. If Jakes’ back lot is full there’s a large parking lot in Unionville available East off Main street. if the weather cooperates we’ll be able to enjoy the patio that evening. Please confirm you’ll be coming so the organizers can reserve a seat for those who are attending.

Sunday, August 24, 2014 10:00 to 10:30 AM: A special ecumenical service will be held outdoors at the Berczy Cemetery on Kennedy Road just North of Unionville. Bring your own folding or lawn chairs, also an umbrella in case it looks like rain. If inclement weather makes the outdoor service impractical, the venue will be moved to the Bethesda Lutheran Church, at 20 Union Street in downtown Unionville (one street West of Main Street, South of the railway tracks). FYI the regular Sunday service at Bethesda Lutheran Church starts at 10:30 AM.

12:00 to 2:00 PM: Second informal gathering and information sharing if you missed the one held Saturday at Warden House or want to do some more visiting. We’ll have full access to the newly renovated Stiver Mill from 12:00 today. Come by and meet Stiver Family descendants for socializing and sharing histories and check out the first-class Mill building renovation.

Be sure and visit the Unionville Farmer’s Market , run weekly by Bob Stiver. It’s located right beside the Stiver Mill. You will be able to purchase lunch from one of the vendors.

2:00 PM: Plaque Presentation The fabulous newly renovated Stiver Mill will be open and we’ll be presenting an appreciation plaque on behalf of the Stivers everywhere to Carolina Moretti who will accept the plaque on behalf of the Mayor of the City of Markham, Frank Scarpitti. The renovation work was completed this past Spring due to the vision and hard work of many. Bring your lawn chairs and if you can for the presentation ceremony. A reception will follow inside the Mill.

The market is open until 4 p.m.

4 PM the Markham Berczy Settlers Association will hold a meeting for the election of officers, to get caught up on news and the financial statements. If you can stay for the meeting, it would be appreciated.
